.... tionary.
So, I'm obsessed with my "shorter" OED (i.e. 2 volumes instead of 20) - and looks like Amber has a different kind. Do people actually HAVE dictionary preferences? What do you do with your dictionary? Do you take it out and play with it often? How big is your dictionary? How do you use it? Do you have more than one dictionary? Let's all get to know each other.

Re: I love my big fat dic .......
Tue, November 2, 2004 - 10:50 AMHmm... I am sadly outdated on my dictionaries. Not only do I not own one that references "bling bling," I don't think I even have one with "dotcom" in it.
I have a nice, old unabridged. I tend to think it's a Websters, but I'll have to verify when I get home.
I generally use the smaller one, but sometimes I like to get out the u.a. and just leaf through it... -

Wed, November 3, 2004 - 9:57 PMYou and Vron win the technology-lovers award!!!
I have used some of the online dictionaries, too, I have to admit - and they're great: especially if you're in a hurry -
but sometimes, and I know I'm weird, I like just paging through the dictionary and discovering funny words - I most often find the best ones when I'm looking for a different definition, but that makes the words all the more satisfying.
so did you know that a Tamanoir is a giant ant eater or ant-bear? What the hell is an ant-bear? Did you even know they existed? Will you dream of them tonight? -

Re: I love my big fat dic .......
Thu, November 4, 2004 - 6:57 AMI did not know of the ant bear, or the name Tamanoir. I did learn from a Snapple cap that beavers used to be the size of bears. (shudders)
I think my favorite dictionarys though, are the big hurkin lugs that sit on pedestals in a prominant place in the house. Nice for walking by and getting a quick hit. My roomate has one in the living room of our apartment. I change the open pages regularily so as to avoid dust and UV damage.

Thu, November 4, 2004 - 2:34 PMWhat a good Defender of the Dictionary you are!
Yup, I have three Webster's... one average-size and two unabridged (one of THOSE is very old).
So, we used to have big beavers and now we have big dictionaries? Huh.

Re: I love my big fat dic .......
Thu, November 4, 2004 - 3:24 PMIf it's not big enough to be used for killing small mammals, it's not big enough for me. (Not that I would want to muss it up.) I generally know the small words already -- it's the big or rare ones that are so interesting.
I visit the dictionary on a daily basis, and I ALWAYS read the etymology. Besides being fascinating (to geeks like me), it helps with understanding the word.
Oh, and my favorite page in the dictionary is the one with the chart of language families. -

Re: I love my big fat dic .......
Thu, November 4, 2004 - 8:53 PMAn excellent point - a dictionary can not only teach you how to defend yourself verbally, but in a pinch, you can smack something with your big dic .... like that ant-bear-tamanoir-thingy, if you happen to see one.
I love the etymology too - very interesting - have you ever taken History of the English Language at UAA? We're studying the way English has changed over the centuries ... you'd prolly love it. I love the *history/sociological* aspect of it, but there's a lot of grammar thrown in there which makes my flesh crawl right offa my limbs .... -

Fri, November 5, 2004 - 12:11 AMOh, and I have to say I'm with roblef. I make regular use of dictionary.com. It's everywhere! And I haven't bothered to buy an office dictionary yet. Perhaps it'll be an OED...

Sat, November 6, 2004 - 5:13 AMNo, I haven't taken History of the English Language, but it's on my list of things to do before I die. :) I don't know what it is, but there's something about language that just fascinates me. -
